According to a recent CNN Tech Report, Minnesota’s Mall of America (@mallofamerica) is tweeting parking information every half hour for their customers.
The information in the tweets is simply which parts of the mall have the most available spots for shoppers’ convenience. In addition, some tweets include exit information as well as caution information.
This is a great service for the biggest mall in the United States. Seeing that last minute shoppers will be plentiful, many will be able to take advantage of the service and find a parking spot in good time.
However, the service could turn out to be potentially dangerous if a driver uses a mobile phone and drives. Especially in crowded parking lots, getting distracted for just one second could result in an accident or wrong turn.
If the tweets turn out to be a success, we could see more busy shopping malls utilizing the technology to connect with the shoppers. As more people join up with Twitter and follow Twitter streams, parking information could eventually become commonplace and possibly automated.
What are your thoughts on parking information shared via Twitter? Is it a good idea? Do you think more malls will begin to use Twitter to share parking information?
